On September 2, the American Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge reopened the 1940's Flattop House with period furnishings, after a temporary closure on July 13 for repair of the Flattop due to rain wicking under the rubber roof and damaging the interior walls.
Since July 13, there have been 12 bronze plaques purchased and added to the boardwalk leading to the Flattop House through the "Buy A Board on the Boardwalk" campaign to maintain AMSE's Flattop House outdoor exhibit. To find out how to purchase a 4" x 6 " bronze plaque with a 48 character message inscibed with the donor's name or message go online www.amse.org/flattop
Thousands of AMSE visitors have entered the 576 sq.ft. two-bedroom AMSE Flattop, since it opened on March 19, 2009, the 60th anniversary of the opening of AMSE and the gates to the city of Oak Ridge. There were 1600 flattops, pre-fab trailer homes that were constructed in three 8' x 24' sections, brought to Oak Ridge, as the population swelled from 13,000 to 75,000 in less than three years. AMSE's Flattop was originally located at 68 Outer Drive in Oak Ridge.
