Certification Review Classes for CPS/CAP

The fall schedule for Certified Professional Secretary and Certified Administrative Professional (CPS/CAP) Certification Program review classes has been announced:
Part 1 (Office Systems and Technology) - 8/24/10 through 9/14/10;
Part 2 (Office Administration) - 9/21/10 through 10/7/10;
Part 3 (Management) - 10/14/10 through 11/4/10.
(Part 4, Organizational Management) will not be available this fall but will be scheduled in the spring.
All classes will be 5:30 p.m. through 8:30 p.m. at the Oak Ridge campus.

The Tennessee Small Business Development Center (TSBDC) offers free assistance to help business owners grow and develop successful, thriving businesses.

Listening Tour: Predatory Lending - Lake City

The Neighborhoods Resource Center and Tennessee Citizen Action, two members of the Coalition for Responsible Lending in Tennessee, announce an East Tennessee Predatory Lending Listening Tour for Wednesday, September 8 in Anderson County - at the Lake City Community Center.
The goal for these sessions is to learn how members, congregants, students, employees, and underserved populations in East Tennessee are being affected by predatory loans practices, such as payday and title loans, and how the CRLT might be able to serve them now and in the future.
The Predatory Lending Listening Tour sessions are open to any group, organization, church, institution of higher learning, technical and trade schools, and businesses whose constituencies are affected by predatory lending practices. The public is invited to attend as well.

The Coalition for Responsible Lending in Tennessee (CRLT) is a voluntary group of public, private, and non-profit organizations and concerned citizens that combine their human and material resources to make fair lending accessible to all by promoting and advocating for financial education, access to responsible lending options, and just lending laws.
The Neighborhoods Resource Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting residents in the formation and development of neighborhood-related organizations. More information can be found at http://www.tnrc.net.

Ronald Wade with the State of Tennessee ECD BERO (Business Enterprise Resource Office) will be available in the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce office by appointment only on September 10, 2010 to meet with businesses interested in looking to start-up, expand, purchase additional inventory or secure working capital.
Housed in the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, the Business Enterprise Resource Office is the state’s primary service organization to Tennessee’s entrepreneurs, small businesses, minority- and women owned businesses. Created in 1977, BERO expands economic opportunities for small, rural, minority, and women owned businesses by providing information on entrepreneurship development programs, procurement opportunities and access to capital with Tennessee private industry and government entities.

Women's Interfaith Dialogue Health Care Forum

Are you curious about the benefits of the new health care law and how it will impact you and your family? If so, the Women’s Interfaith Dialogue of Oak Ridge invites you to a forum on Health Care Reform on September 13, 2010 from 2:00pm-3:30pm at the Oak Ridge Jewish Congregation, 101 W. Madison, located behind Methodist Medical Center at the corner of W. Tennessee Avenue and W. Madison Lane.
Beth Uselton, Lead Organizer for the Tennessee Health Care Campaign (THCC), will discuss provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. For the past year and a half, she has been researching and presenting information for public education and working with policymakers, medical providers, social workers, and community leaders to help them understand the new law. THCC is a non-partisan, non-profit statewide advocacy organization whose mission is for everyone to have guaranteed affordable choices in health care.
Lenny Croce, an attorney with the Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands, will discuss Medicare, Medicaid and Tenncare issues.
Dr. Carl Matthews, retired pathologist and Director of Labs at St. Mary’s Hospital, will discuss healthcare quality improvement and cost containment in health care delivery. He has particular expertise in the use of electronic medical records.
Members of WID represent the Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Hindu, Muslim, Baha'i, Buddhist, and Unitarian Universalist faith traditions. Their programs and projects aim to bring together women of diverse faith, color, and culture to explore, understand and learn from one another. Their purpose is to advance justice, compassion, friendship, and human rights, with a focus on women and children. However a most enjoyable part of association with each other is simply sharing each other's spiritual journeys as friends.

Healthquest Seminar – “What You Need to Know About Pre-Diabetes”

The monthly Healthquest Seminar held at Clinton Physical Therapy Center on Tuesday, September 14th at 6:30 PM will be presented by Robin Porter, RN, BSN from Covenant Health. This is an informative talk open to the public.
There are 57 million Americans with pre-diabetes and most of them don’t know it. Without intervention the majority of people with pre-diabetes will develop type 2 diabetes. The good news is that if caught early, diabetes in not inevitable.

10th Annual Clinch River Antiques Festival

The 10th Annual Clinch River Antiques Festival will be held on October 8th and 9th, 2010, in Historic Downtown Clinton, Tennessee. The Festival begins with a kick-off party Friday evening, October 8th from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. in the Hoskins/Lane Park on Market Street. There will be plenty of food and live musical entertainment with the downtown shops open late for the event. There are over 100 antique dealers located in shops in and around the Historic Downtown District.
On Saturday, October 9th, the RAIN or SHINE event is scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Market Street will be closed to traffic as antiques dealers and artisans line the street for the Antiques Festival. The festival will accommodate over 75 exhibitors from all over East Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, as well as other surrounding states.
This year’s festival will feature:
- Joe Rosson, Antiques Road Show antique appraiser will be available to appraise your personal treasures on Saturday, excluding weapons and new collectibles.
- Re-enactment of the famous Aaron Burr – Alexander Hamilton Duel
- Beautiful cars from the Clinton Regional AACA Antique Car Club
- Live entertainment
- Children’s activities sponsored by First Baptist Church
- A wide variety of food for the family
“The festival continues to grow beyond our expectations. We expect over 8,000 for this year’s event”, said Chamber President Jackie Nichols. The festival is presented by the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the City of Clinton. Educational Seminar for Area Administrative Support Staffers

The Maryville, Oak Ridge, and Knoxville (M-O-R-K) Chapters of the International Association of Administrative Professionals® is proud to announce their annual educational seminar open to all area administrative support personnel to be held on Tuesday, October 19, 2010, at the Performing Arts Center at the Pellissippi State Technical Community College.
Kelly Floyd of Covenant Health in Knoxville will present a two-hour program on “Emotional Intelligence” from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., and Betsy Cunningham of Maryville will present the afternoon session on “Assertive Communications without Being Aggressive” from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Four (4) recertification points will be awarded to attendees.
