August 30, 2010
|
Labor Day weekend is often considered the unofficial end of those “lazy, hazy summer days,” and marking this occasion is the Oak Ridge Community Band’s Labor Day Concert on Monday, September 6, 7:00 p.m. at A.K. Bissell Park. This is the Community Band’s last outdoor concert for summer 2010 and is free to the public. Razzleberry's Ice Cream Lab will be in the park to help patrons keep cool with its delicious ice cream. So bring your family and friends, bring the lawn chairs and blankets, and prepare to enjoy a casual and entertaining evening of summertime music!
Band leader Dale Pendley and assistant conductor will be directing the Community Band as it performs a program that will include Dolly Parton's "Nine to Five," Leroy Anderson's "Bugler's Holiday" featuring the cornet section, John Philip Sousa's "Gladiator March," and Sammy Nestico's arrangement of "Salute to American Jazz" with tunes from "St. Louis Blues," 'Night in Tunisia," "Birdland," and "It Don't Mean a Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing."
The audience will also enjoy hearing the Community Band play Rossini's "William Tell Overture," Alfred Reed's arrangement of "Clear Track Polka," M.H. Ribble's "Bennet's Triumphal," and Warren Barker's arrangement of a medley of Broadway's top hits including "Gigi," "Let Me Entertain You," "I Could Have Danced All Night," and "Can-Can."
Information about the Oak Ridge Community Band's upcoming subscription season will be on the backs of the Labor Day programs. The Community Band's summertime outdoor concerts are familiar to many people, but the Community Band becomes the Oak Ridge Wind Ensemble during the winter months when it performs six indoor concerts featuring the best of the band repertoire of show tunes, marches, classical, novelty pieces, movie themes, and seasonal favorites. Persons who would like to purchase season membership cards for $15 per individual (for all 6 concerts) or $30 for a family membership card can call (865) 859-0641 or (865) 483-3044 for more information or simply mail your donation to ORCB, P.O.
